Description
This large anemone lives buried in soft sand or grit and can only be seen during the night. Then only mouth and tentacles will be visible, the column remains hidden in the sediment. The outer tentacles are spread and the inner tentacles are erected. This is a typical behaviour for this anemone. There are 48 tentacles in 4 rows around the mouth and are of different lengths. The inner once are the longest. Reproduction is oviparous.

Size
The column is approximately 200 mm long with a diameter of 50 mm . The base disk is around 25 mm, oral disc about 13 mm. The tentacles vary in length between 80 mm to 200 mm.

Colour
The colour can vary from whitish beige to reddish brown. Probably younger animals are lighter in colour, the locality could also affect the colour.

Habitat
On soft substrate from 6 to 60 meters.

Distribution
Atlantic coast of south Europe and the entire Mediterranean.
