Description
The common shrimp has a short, wide and tapered rostrum. They hunt during the night
and during daytime they will stay buried in the sand or mud. Only the eyes and antennas
remain visible. They feed on algae but also small fish, shrimps and worms. This
shrimp breeds twice a year and the eggs are carried between the legs by the female.
The eggs hatch after 4 to 12 weeks, depending on the temperature.
Size
Generally 50 mm to 70 mm.
Colour
The colour can vary from grey to dark brown, with spots. The colour can be adapted
to the surroundings.
Habitat
Shallow waters, on sand, mud or gravel sea floors where they can bury.
Distribution
North-east Altlantic and Mediterranean sea.
