Description
The plain shrimp has a straight rostrum with dark spots on the lower half. Its body
is transparent with small speckles all over. It lacks the fine lines like the P.
serratus and P. elegans. They have one pair of very long antennas and one pair that
is shorter. They are elegant swimmers but don't like a too strong current.
Size
Length up to 70 mm.
Colour
The transparent body is covered with white and red to brown speckles. Yellow bands
around the legs near the joints. Sometimes the yellow bands are so faint that they
can hardly be noticed. The lower half of the rostrum is reddish brown. The longest
antenna are brownish, the shorter ones are reddish with white bands.
Habitat
Mainly in shallow brackish or salt water, without current (or very weak current),
between weeds and algae. In tidal waters they can be found in quiet spots like harbours.
Distribution
Nort East Atlantic and Mediterranean sea.
